Screening of novel anthocyanin mutants by re-irradiation of ion beams in ${it Arabidopsis thaliana}$ mutant

Kitamura, Satoshi; Ono, Yutaka; Narumi, Issey*

JAEA-Review 2015-022, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2014, P. 64, 2016/02

Forward genetics approaches have helped elucidate the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway in plants. We used the ${it Arabidopsisa}$ banyuls (ban) mutant, which accumulates anthocyanins, instead of colorless proanthocyanidin precursors, in immature seeds. In contrast to standard screens for mutants lacking anthocyanins in leaves/stems, we mutagenized ban plants and screened for mutants showing differences in pigmentation of immature seeds. The pale banyuls1 (pab1) mutation was found to show reduced levels of anthocyanins in immature seed coat. Here we characterize this mutant at the molecular level.

Principle of radiation sterilization and world trends in food irradiation

Kobayashi, Yasuhiko

Sofuto, Dorinku Gijutsu Shiryo, (175), p.103 - 128, 2015/04

Food irradiation is a technology to treat foods with ionizing radiation such as $$gamma$$-rays and electron beams to improve the safety and extends the shelf life of foods by reducing or eliminating microorganisms and insects, and by prevention of sprouting. The food irradiated with ionizing radiation is named as "irradiated food". Many international organizations have approved the safety and usefulness of food irradiation. Ionizing radiation can treat packaged foods and fresh and/or frozen products, and effectively and uniformly treat all portions of foods. Food irradiation is an environmentally friendly technology without usage of chemicals and contributes to the solution of food security and food sanitary problems especially reducing post-harvest losses of foods and controlling food borne illness, as an alternative to chemical fumigation with ethylene oxide and methyl bromide gasses. Japan has a 50 years history of food irradiation research. The "Japanese Research Association for Food Irradiation" has been launched in 1965. It was legally authorized to irradiate potatoes for preventing germination in 1972 and since 1974 irradiation potato has been shipped from the Shihoro-cho Agricultural Cooperative Association in Hokkaido. Recently commercial food irradiation has increased significantly in Asia, however, Japan is now far behind other countries and it is called a "food irradiation underdeveloped country".

Present status and future subjects of the analytical studies related with application of charged particles and RI to materials science and biotechnology

Working Group in the Advisory Committee of the Analytical Studies for Application of Charged Particl

JAERI-Review 2003-008, 42 Pages, 2003/03

JAERI-Review-2003-008.pdf:3.12MB

The position in the research field of radiation application of "Theoretical Analysis Group for Radiation Application" which will be set up within fiscal 2003, and the relation between the research that this analytical group will advance in future and the analytical research made so far at JAERI Takasaki are summarized. First, the theoretical analysis group for radiation application extracts only the core element from the analysis of reactive process of charged particles in the materials and from the irradiation effect, and then constructs the simplified model. Second, the validity of the constructed model is verified by advancing the theoretical analysis based on the model, and the calculated result is fed back to the experiment, and then the verification is carried out. Finally, the general-purpose theorization will be conducted by generalizing and universalizing the obtained model concerning the specific system. The obtained outcomes will be applied to other systems, and, will consequently, contribute to the promotion of new technological development.

Present status of dosimetry for radiation application

Kojima, Takuji

Hoshasen To Sangyo, (89), p.4 - 7, 2001/01

This paper describes the present status of dosimetry as one of the useful technique for the process/quality control in radiation application and radiation research/testing. It introduces (a)activities in dose standardization of International Organization for Standardization(ISO) and International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) on publication of standards and organization of workshops, (b)recent efforts for consistency check in dose evaluation of electrons having energies above 4MeV, and (c)development status of dosimeter systems relevant to new requirements in dosimetry. It also comments on importance of planning for succession of high-dose dosimetry technology and education/training of dosimetry workers/researchers.
